Open Question: Best universities in the Pacific NW?

My new wife's son is 17, in his senior year of high school, and getting some interest for football scholarships. He's "shopping": being a very bright kid, he's more interested in academics than the perception of the football team (If that was the case, he'd be a lock for Boise State, lol.) As 90% of the family lives here, he wants to remain close; Mid-west, Southern, & Eastern schools probably won't stand a chance of recruiting this kid. My question: What are the best ACADEMIC schools in the Pacific NW / Rocky Mt. area.
